I glared up at Beta Don with a puzzled look playing on my face. "But why?" I asked. Beta Don plopped down on the leather chair in the corner of the room, shaking his head and rubbing his temple with his hand. "What causes a man to elope from his pack? Leave behind his mate, his family, his pack? And steal all the classified medical records belonging to Midnight Moon? Addie, I have no bloody idea," he responded, not bothering to hide how defeated he truly felt.
The hard expression on Beta Don's face didn't fade; instead, I noticed it became colder, alarmingly detached. I cleared my throat, snapping Beta Don's attention back to me as his eyes shot up to meet my gaze. "Doctor Raymond doesn't strike me as a traitor to his pack. Maybe... something happened?" I continued, desperately trying to soften the blow, but the look on Beta Don's face told me he didn't buy it. "If you think so, Luna," he replied respectfully and stood up from the leather chair.
I sighed and took a deep breath. "I guess I should go check on the future Luna," I joked, choking out a laugh. Beta Don's expression remained unchanged, but the five o'clock shadow on his face told me he was merely suppressing his feelings as much as he could. There was no doubt in my mind that he'd had a rough night. Finally responding, he nodded at me. "Should make for a full house today. Alphas and their second-in-commands have been arriving from all over the country. There's already a handful that arrived late last night, all looking for their one true fated mate."
I cocked my head at Beta Don as my eyebrows began to knit together. "Well, they'll sure as hell be disappointed when they realize that their fellow Alpha Christian is her mate," I replied, rolling my eyes. Beta Don's eyes darkened at the name I dared to let roll off my lips. He scoffed as he approached the door, attempting a quick exit. "Some mate he is. Hasn't even shown up to Midnight Moon territory yet," he muttered under his breath.
I felt the hurt in his words, and he was right—Sophia didn't deserve a scumbag as a mate, but there was nothing either of us could do. The Moon Goddess must have had her reasons for pairing the two. I felt my heart sink into the pit of my stomach as Beta Don reached for the door handle. I tried to coil the words back, but they slipped out between my lips: "So help me, Moon Goddess, if that fuckface of an Alpha hurts her, I'll make sure he wears his dick as a fucking tie." My face warmed, and I was sure I looked flushed as embarrassment took over.
A chuckle came from across the room as Beta Don turned to look at me, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. "As always, I'll stand by your decisions, Luna—regardless of who the fuckface is," he replied playfully, but I knew he meant every word.
The door soon clicked as Beta Don disappeared, and I found myself alone with my own thoughts. My wolf had been growling and clawing inside me since this morning. She had become a lot more protective over us and Alpha Jaxon—determined to protect our little family at all costs. I raked my brain for any logical reason why Alpha Christian hadn't shown up yet. I expected him to be the first here, anxiously awaiting the stroke of midnight to sneak into Sophia's bedroom and announce he was her fated mate. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was very wrong as alarm bells began ringing in my head.
I decided to start putting myself together. I stepped out of bed and felt the silk bedsheet fall to the floor. I bent down to reach for the sheet, and just as my fingers wrapped around the smooth material, I felt something hard press against my back and startled. "Shhh," a voice behind me said softly as fingers brushed down my jaw to the base of my neck, causing an orchestra of shivers to play across my skin. I couldn't help the moan that escaped my lips as I melted into the sudden heat flooding my body.
"You... like this... this is my favorite sight," Jaxon whispered as his lips moved up and down my neck. I felt his large, firm hands slide up my body and couldn't stop the wetness pooling between my legs.
He pushed his hard bulge into me a little harder, and I felt my legs begin to tremble. I tried to stay upright, but it was as if my body had a mind of its own, and I collapsed onto the bed on all fours, spread out and anxiously awaiting my Alpha's next move. "Such a good fucking girl," Jaxon gritted through his teeth as his palms roughly started massaging my ass. I knew he could smell my arousal when he took a deep breath and moved behind me, climbing onto the bed.
"Jax—Jaxon!" I shrieked. "The entire pack house is filled with guests! They'll hear us!"
He bent over me, his warm breath brushing against my earlobe. "Let them," he said in a dangerously low voice that sent tingles up my spine as he plunged his thick finger deep into my channel. I felt my entire body convulse as I tightened around his finger. My back arched, my body submitting to the pleasure as he pumped violently into me. "Take it, take all of it," he whispered as he added another finger.
I couldn't hold back the sudden moan that escaped. I felt Jaxon's hand tighten around my arm, making it increasingly difficult to wiggle out from under him. "Are you trying to run away, little mate?" he asked as he flipped me over. I felt my body bounce against the plush mattress, and the air escaped from my lungs as I stared up into Jaxon's darkened eyes. His wolf pushed forward, and I felt my own responding to his call. I wanted to submit to him; I wanted to let him do whatever he pleased with me.
