Chapter 63

Aurora climbed down the stairs with tentative steps, her fingers were delicately wrapped around the banister and her eyes flickered around the room carefully.

There was nothing off about what was happening, it was a regular Saturday morning in the Rochester household. Rosa was carrying the basket of laundry, heading towards the laundry room while some of the maids were cleaning around. Her father was in his usual spot, a pair of reading glasses perched on his nose, a newspaper in one hand and a steaming cup of coffee in the other.

Miriam Rochester on the other hand was discussing with someone on the phone, pacing back and forth and making exaggerated movements with her hand. Evan was still in his room but he would be down any moment from now.

Her feet touched the last steps and she trudged towards the living room. The sense of normalcy would usually bring warmth to her chest but she knew that there was nothing normal about today. Her mother's left hand was still wrapped in gaze from her last outburst and her father had refused to tell her what happened, Rosa was also in on it pretending not to hear her whenever she asked.

"Good morning," She muttered and Harry's head snapped upwards, a lazy smile crawling on his lips.

"Darling, you're awake already," He sounded surprised and for good reason, she normally slept in on weekends using those days to recharge from the stress of the week, "Is something wrong?"

She shook her head, nearly jumping when the doorbell echoed. Her eyes darted towards the door and her heart pounded with anxiety,

"I'll get it," One of the maids, a brunette she didn't recognize, answered and rushed towards the door.

Aurora waited with bated breath as she heard the door click open and then a chirpy greeting from the girl. When the maid returned with a brown package in hand, her shoulder deflated.

"Oh, that's for me," Her mother piped up, stopping beside her to presse a kiss to her cheek, "Good morning, darling. Why are you up early?"

She ignored the question, frowning in confusion as Miriam retrieved the small brown box from the girl's hold. Just as she tucked it into her pocket, Aurora got a glimpse of the labelling,

'RDJ Pharmaceuticals'

Her heart skipped a beat, did her mother purchase a new batch of drugs already?

If she did then it meant that...a tiny gasp escaped her and a hopeful feeling bloomed in her chest.

Her gaze flickered towards the door again, where was he?

This was a perfect opportunity to end this. As if on cue, the doorbell rang again and this time it was her parents who looked confused.

"I'll get it," She echoed, rushing towards the door and stopped when she spotted Eva coming down the stairs, he was already dressed in his work clothes which meant he would leave any moment from now.

She did a quick prayer, hoping that it was really who she was expecting behind the door. Aurora didn't check the peephole, she simply pulled the door open and a relieved breath escaped her when her eyes fell on the three officers standing in front of her.

The one at the middle, a blonde-haired middle-aged man with a stubble raised his badge, "Nickson Jury from the CPD, you're Aurora Rochester, right?"

She nodded, pulling the door wide open, "I've been waiting for you. Please, come in."

He tucked in his badge and walked in, flanked by the other two officers, one a brunette and the other a redhead. When they arrived at the living room, everyone suddenly stilled. They looked to be in some sort of conversation, Evan was facing her father and Miriam had a displeased look on her features, one that crumbled when she sighted the officers.

"Good morning, my name is Nickson Jury and these are my acquaintances, Officer Black," The brunette tipped his head, "And Officer Kingston, we're from the CPD."

Harry was the first to react, slowly rising from the couch and turning to face them, "And what would the Canadian police department have with my house?"

Aurora took the chance to walk forward, her gaze determined, "I called them here."

They had equal looks of astonishment, except Evan who'd tilted his head to the side, an amused smirk on his lips. She bristled at his expression but chose to ignore him,

"W-Why would y-you do that?" Her father sputtered, his widened eyes going even wider. Miriram looked like someone who was about ready to swoon.

She licked her lips nervously, now was the time to reveal Evan's wicked deeds but somehow she couldn't muster the courage to open her mouth. Luckily, Nickson Jury rushed to her rescue and interjected,

"We have the order to arrest Evan Michaels Rochester for drug poisoning, stalking and illegal capturing of private photos," He turned towards her, "Where is his room?"

"The second door on your right," She answered without hesitation.

He gestured with his head at Kingston who rushed upstairs, Officer Black had already brought out a handcuff and was now advancing towards Evan who had a ghosted expression.

"W-Wait a minute, I-I don't-" Harry shook his head before facing her, "Aurora what's going on?"

She looked helplessly at her parents, first at her mother who had crashed to the floor and her father who looked totally lost. She slowly walked towards them, dipped her hand into her pocket and brought out the plastic bag,

"I don't know how long he's been doing this but your son switched mom's drugs with this one," She placed it in his trembling palm, "This is why mom hasn't been herself lately, Evan has been poisoning her."

A choked sound escaped his lips and her face crumpled sadly. Miriram was still on the ground, muttering and shaking her head, she didn't blame her.

Harry looked up, at his son who was now bound in handcuffs as the officer drilled out his rights to him.

He raised the bag, "Is she telling the truth?"

Aurora's gaze flickered towards Evan and she knew that he would deny it so she prepared to bring out her phone to play the voice recordings of him threatening her but then he answered,

"Yes," He responded with a deranged smile, "I planned on killing your wife but then your stupid daughter got in the way and then I got the idea, rather than killing her, why don't I just make her lose her mind just like she did with my mother?" He cackled hysterically and Harry took a shaky step backwards, nearly losing his balance.

Officer Kingston arrived then, holding a familiar silver laptop, "Found it and you won't believe the amount of images he has in here," He shook his head, throwing Evan a disgusted look, "I think he has a hidden camera in her room."

She expected that so it wasn't surprising at all but to hear them say it like that brought another wave of nausea rushing. She felts hands grab her arms in an effort to steady her and when she looked up, she caught her mother's silver gaze.

"Mom?"

Miriam smiled shakily, looking towards the officers, "Take him away, I don't want him to spend another second in my house," She spat with venom and Nickson nodded, pushing Evan away.

When they got in front of her, Evan shoved the two officers away, running towards her with alarming speed. The officers yelled and one had actually pulled out a gun but she just froze, her heart stopping for a millisecond and then, Evan stopped in front of her, leaning to whisper,

"Be prepared, princess."

He was dragged away after that, everything happened so quickly that she lost strength in her legs and fell to the ground, with her mother trying to help her up but she couldn't find the energy to rise.

Not when Evan's maniacal laughter kept ringing in her head. She tried to be optimistic, he was just bluffing. Mr. Carlos had promised that he would spend a good amount of years behind bars and there was a possibility of psychiatry service.

She'd won and it was over but why did it feel like the war was just starting and she had just been a catalyst in his plans.
