Chapter 8: Confession Under the Moon

The campfire crackled, illuminating their weary faces. Rayne's injuries had improved under the effect of Silver Fern powder, but his expression remained grave.
"Today's attack was no accident," Rayne broke the silence. "Someone wants us dead."
Lyra nodded: "Or at least wants one of us dead."
Rayne cast a piercing gaze at her: "You don't seem surprised by any of this."
Lyra took a deep breath, deciding to probe for the truth: "I just feel that some things aren't as simple as they appear. Like your relationship with Karen."
Rayne's expression grew complex: "Karen is the son of my father's most trusted advisor, but that doesn't mean I trust him."
"Why?" Lyra pressed.
Rayne was silent for a moment: "Intuition. Just like your wariness of him."
Moonlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Lyra gazed at this scene, suddenly recalling memories of the Full Moon Night from her previous life—the last full moon before her death.
"Do you believe in destiny?" she asked softly.
Rayne looked up at the bright moon: "I believe in choices. Each choice brings different results, and these results weave together to form our destiny."
Lyra felt a slight pain in her heart: "If... if you discovered you made the wrong choice and hurt someone you care about, what would you do?"
Rayne's gaze became unusually gentle: "I would do everything in my power to make amends. Even if it costs me my life."
His hand unconsciously brushed over the scar on his wrist, a gesture Lyra noticed.
"That scar, is it really just an old wound?" she asked cautiously.
In the moonlight, Rayne's expression became vulnerable like never before: "It's a symbol of a promise. A promise I couldn't fulfill."
Lyra felt difficulty breathing: "A promise to whom?"
Rayne looked straight into her eyes: "To someone I loved deeply but failed to protect."
These words were like a key, unlocking a certain door in Lyra's heart. Did Rayne truly love her in his past life? Or had this life's Rayne fallen in love with who she was now?
In the moonlight, Rayne slowly moved closer, his hand gently caressing Lyra's cheek: "Lyra, I don't know why you're so guarded against me, but I want you to know that I will protect you with my life. Not because of a contract, not because of duty, but because..."
His words were silenced against Lyra's lips. The kiss was gentle and restrained, yet filled with endless emotion.
When they parted, tears glistened in Lyra's eyes. Her plan for revenge was wavering, while the feelings in her heart grew increasingly clear.
