Chapter 113: Arrested too

"Lynn," she breathed as she slowly walked toward me. Luix stepped out of her way as she placed her hand on my cheek. "Oh, lynn."
Without warning, I let out a small sob and knew my soul was breaking over lost time with my true family. I didn't know any of them, but my soul did and that's all I needed to feel to know that they were my real family.
I threw my arms around the woman's shoulders in front of me as she embraced me with hers. We held each other for what felt like forever as I looked up and into my sister's eyes. Tears filled her gaze as she grinned at our embrace; her hand rested over her heart.
"We've missed you, dear lynn," my grandma whispered into my ear.
"Why didn't any of you come for me?" I asked as we parted from our embrace.
Sadness swam over her features as she looked between Bobby and Careen. "We tried for years, but the contract that Kathy made your mother sign was solid. Our lawyers tried and failed to find any loop holes. We never forgot about you, lynn."
I understood what she was saying. "But what about when I was older? I would assume that after I turned eighteen, you could have reached out to me."
"We did. Our letters and calls went unanswered. We came to your home after you married that man named Jason and he told us that he'd have you call us. Every time we reached out to you, you never got our messages."
My anger toward Jason ramped up all over again. He had almost completely destroyed me during our marriage and then he did this? I hope he rots in jail for the rest of his life.
Just then, Micky ran out but paused when he saw me. His gaze told me he knew immediately what was happening and waited patiently to speak to me.
"Well, I'm here now," I stated. "I'd love to get to know all of you."
Mama Bell let out a small whimper, covered her mouth, and tried not to cry. "We'd love nothing more, sweet lynn",
"I leave for Florida in the morning, but we can have dinner tonight?" I looked over at Drake to confirm this as he nodded at me.
Careen stepped forward then and we exchanged contact information before they left the courthouse. My heart was so full that I felt like I could cry, but then I remembered Micky had come out looking like he was on a mission.
"What's going on, Mick?"
He approached and looked between Drake and me. "I just got confirmation that Jason is going to be in jail for a very long time. One of the correction officers told me that he attacked a guard last night after they told him he had additional charges against him. With the charges and his assault on an officer, he's not getting out anytime soon."
I finally let out the sob that I held in my chest as I looked up at Drake. Everything was falling into place and I didn't know how to control all of these happy emotions that were consuming me. I had had a bad string of luck over the years and things were finally turning in my favor.
"Why don't you guys get some fresh air. I just need to grab a few things and I'll meet you out front." Micky turned and headed toward the administration desk as Drake guided me toward the front doors.
The sun warmed my face the moment we stepped outside as I inhaled a deep, calming breath. It was finally almost all over and I would never look back.
"You fucking bitch!"
My head whipped over as I saw Melissa climb out the back of a taxi, Conner in tow. The rage inside of me ignited the moment I saw her pull Conner around like a rag doll. And then there was the small bruise on his cheek and I lost it.
I stormed toward her and was about to strangle the bitch When Drake pulled me back.
"Not here, babe. She'll do anything to take you down with her. Don't give her that satisfaction."
Melissa laughed and shook her head. "I still can't believe he chose you over me." She looked at Drake and back at me with disgust. "Well, you'll be sorry when I'm through with you, lynn."
"Melissa," Micky growled as he approached her and tore her hand away from Conner and swung them to her back, "You have the right to remain silent."
"What?!" She shrieked. "What am I being arrested for?! I haven't done anything!"
"Not according to the statement Gene made last night. You're under arrest for illegal purchase and distribution of a firearm. You're also under arrest for embezzlement." Then he looked at Conner. "And I'm sure there will be child abuse charges in there somewhere." He cuffed her and began pulling her toward a squad car parked at the curb.
"This is asinine!!" She screamed and tried to break free from Micky, but he held on tightly.
She continued screaming profanities and acted like a crazy person before Micky shoved her into the back of the squad. Once he slammed the door on her, it went silent.
Micky walked back over and kneeled down in front of Conner. "Hey kid, I promise everything will be okay."
Conner searched his eyes and then threw himself into Micky's arms. I let out a small sob before I covered my mouth. That poor, sweet baby had clearly been through some shit and he was thankful to be out of it. I knew that feeling all too well.
"Hey, it's okay," Micky assured Conner as he rubbed his little back. "You don't have to be afraid any longer."
Conner stepped back and smiled at Micky and it broke my heart. Two ladies approached them as one of them kneeled down in front of Conner next to Micky.
"Hi, Conner. My name is April and I'm going to bring you someplace safe. Is that okay?"
Conner looked at Micky for reassurance and got a nod in return. Then Conner took the woman's hand before they walked back into the courthouse.
I didn't know Conner at all, or that he even existed, until this weekend but my heart broke for that little boy.
I grabbed Micky's arm as he stood up. "Keep your promise to me, Mick. Don't let anything bad happen to that little boy."
"You have my word, lynn." He turned his gaze to Drake then. "Take care of her, will you?"
Drake stepped up beside me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. "Always. You have my word."
Micky nodded before he turned and headed for the squad car to take my sister away. Everything was done. There wasn't a single thing from my past left untied and I had never felt better.
"I need a fucking drink," Luis blurted before I burst out laughing.
"Me too, Luis, me too." And I would savor the hell out of that celebratory drink. It was well needed and deserved.
